35 YEARS OF HIGHCROSS

First opening as The Shires in 1991, the centre underwent a landmark £350 million redevelopment in 2008 to become the Highcross we know today.

On opening day (12 September 1991), the centre welcomed over 125,000 people and more than one million in its first fortnight, introducing shoppers to brands like John Lewis, Zara, Apple, Hugo Boss, Lacoste and G-Star—each reflecting the trends of the day—as well as restaurants and cafes, a cinema, new public spaces and residential apartments.

While a number of those opening day retailers still remain, so too do many of Highcross’ team. Mark Tunaley, Technical Services Coordinator, and Richard Howard, Environmental Services Team Leader have spent the last 35 years at the centre racking up a combined seven decades of experience.

Having worked through major local and national historical events—including Leicester City’s Premier League win, the reburial of King Richard III and the entrance refurbishment, Highcross’ most significant investment since The Shires transformation—both see Highcross as a second home.

Richard said: “I’ve been here for 34 years and eight months, so I’ve watched my family grow, made friends and seen both Highcross and Leicester change enormously. Despite all of that change though, Highcross to me still means ‘pride’; a safe, friendly and welcoming place for everyone. I’m privileged to have been a part of it for so many years.”

Mark, who first came to The Shires as an electrician to install the centre’s Christmas decorations, added: “It feels like it’s just always been here, right at the heart of the city; a place where people can meet and spend time together. That will always be true, no matter what changes inside or outside its doors.”

In recent years, Highcross has continued to evolve by introducing top retail and dining brands—including Mango, Space NK, Hollister, Wingstop and Bill’s—alongside unique experiences that go far beyond traditional shopping. From hosting the UK’s first augmented reality experience to commissioning local art murals and supporting charities like LOROS, the centre remains connected to its community.

Michelle Menezes, Centre Director at Highcross Leicester, said:

“Reaching 35 years is a fantastic milestone and a chance to celebrate everything that’s made Highcross such an important part of Leicester.

“While no journey’s without its challenges, we’re proud of how we’ve grown alongside a changing city and retail landscape. From introducing much-loved brands to hosting heartwarming community initiatives, we remain fully committed to listening, adapting and building an even better experience for our shoppers every single day. There’s so much more to come, so watch this space.”
