In Roman times Leicester was called Ratae Corieltauvorum –‘Ratae’ for short – and parts of this ancient walled town are still standing today
Join us for an action-packed celebration of our Roman History, where you can march with the Legionaries as they parade through Highcross, help build a replica Roman forum and complete our Roman trail.
Highcross and Leicester boasts a rich Roman heritage. Before the centre was constructed, archaeologists unearthed evidence of opulent townhouses and numerous artefacts that connected the city to the vast Roman Empire, including lynch pins, Roman brooches and Ampulla's.
Excavations in the city uncover artifacts and structures that shed light on its Roman, medieval, and more recent past. These archaeological digs not only safeguard and preserve Leicester's historical legacy but also offer significant educational and cultural benefits to the community.
Archaeological discoveries of Roman Leicester continue to emerge, with notable excavations conducted on Highcross Street in 2017 which can be seen in the images. These excavations revealed fascinating insights into the city's Roman past, including a well-preserved Roman mosaic dating back to the early fourth century AD.
The excavation covered nearly two-thirds of a Roman insula (city block), revealing a Roman street and three Roman buildings. One of the buildings had a large sunken room or cellar, possibly with a small apse, suggesting it might have been a shrine.
These discoveries provide a glimpse into Roman life in Leicester, showcasing the city's rich historical heritage.
